Saying good-bye is hard!

As many of you have now heard, Classic Elite Yarns will be closing its doors in the very near future. It was a difficult decision; one made with a lot of careful thought. Times change; tastes change; business changes. As much as those of us in the company love working with yarn, creating beautiful products, fostering a nurturing work environment, in the end it’s a business. Kristin Nicholas, one the company’s first creative directors, wrote a nice piece about changes in the yarn business, and among other things she says “business has gotten tougher and tougher over the last few years. The business model is changing and it is not going to stop changing.”

All that being said, I cannot express enough how special it has been to provide beautiful products to you – the knitters and crocheters and makers – over these many years. We just published Web-letter #553. That’s over 553 weeks of patterns and inspiration, starting with a market bag in July 2007. And just like that market bag, so many of our patterns – both free and for-a-fee – continue to be relevant! That's a nice legacy.

In our final post to you, I want to publicly thank many people for their hard work and dedication. To the amazing team working here in Massachusetts – they are dedicated, hard-working, and much like a family. I wish them only the best as they start their next chapters. To the sales team – these are people who are on the road all year long, presenting our products to amazing small business owners who work so hard to bring the very best into their shops so that you can have the very best materials to work with. A special shout-out to those local yarn shops. In a time when small business is under incredible pressure, these women and men get up every day and are in their shops to serve you – with products, with inspiration, with knowledge, and with a helping hand! Please take a minute the next time you are in a shop, to thank the owner and employees, and to make a purchase, no matter how small! It all adds up.

I am proud of what we did for all these years. Classic Elite Yarns will live on – on your needles or in your stash, as finished pieces, on Ravelry, and yes, for a while anyway, in shops. But as it fades away, be sure you do your best to enjoy the craft and do your best to support those who bring you the fibers and designs we all love.

On a personal level, I'll be taking some family time and trying out retirement - and hopefully doing some knitting!

Thank you ALL from the bottom of my heart.

Betsy Perry, President

  12. My very first sweater was knit with CEY yarn and pattern. I love it , still wear it, and still receive compliments. Only I realize that it is not my novice work that makes it shine, but your wonderful yarn and pattern. I will miss all of you. Thanks!

  18. I've always loved CEY patterns and am still knitting from some that go back to the early 90s. Will you continue to make CEY'S patterns available through another source, such as Pattenworks, which already has quite of few of your older patterns?

  19. I have loved your yarns and still do. You will be missed. Will your blog be archived for us to refer back to when we need a particular pattern?

  26. CYE yarns and patterns are a huge part of my knitting stash. So sorry to see you go - your business is the gold standard for this longtime knitter. Thank you from the bottom of my creative heart ❤️

  27. Oh no! I love your yarns, even the discontinued ones that I snag on Ravelry and eBay. Right now I’m knitting another striped sweater, Heidi Kirrmaier’s After the Rain sweater with one of my all time favorites: Allegoro Cotton and Linen. It’s the second sweater of this design made with this yarn. The first one was with a sage green and pale pink stripes and my current one is of parchment and linen stripes with just two berry stripes in the body and at the end of the sleeves. I still have two sweater’s worth of this yarn in my stash..it’s my favorite Spring and Fall sweater yarn. The entire knitting world has changed considerably, I agree, but it’s very sad to lose a great yarn company who creates such wonderful yarns. I will miss you very much.

  29. I am sad to hear this news. Over 20 years ago I started a shop out of my home and Classic Elite was the first yarn company to let me open an account. Through the years the were very supportive and when I opened s brick and mortar sho they were a major supporter and one of our best selling lines. I will miss the quality yarns that you offered to vendors and knitters! I totally believe that the internet had screwed up our knitting industry.
    You’ll be missed!

  33. one of my sons former teachers exclaimed that she is always being stopped and asked “where (they) can get that sweater? She smiles and says a friend made it specially for her daughter— I know WE made it special - my stitches and your yarn! In your retirement think of all the comforting shawls, sweet baby sweaters, and pussy hats are stitched up in CEY. Imagine all the boyfriend sweaters and miles of wear Alpaca Sox has walked ...

  34. So saddened by this news. Some of the best yarns in my stash are Classic Elite Yarns. This is a sad day for knitting and independent companies. Yarn stores disappearing, but the single independent dyers proliferate. Can’t you make an agreement with a national outlet and bring quality yarns to those whose only stores are large craft stores or Walmart? I wish all of you future success

I've got plenty of CEY yarn in my stash & have the Liberty Wool Shadow Striped Pullover up for knit in my queue. I picked up the yarn for it at the Webs retreat last fall. We had the pleasure of sitting with Susan Mills at the retreat & really enjoyed her company & humor. Again, many thanks & best wishes to you all as you move on.
